“Politics has always been a game wealthy people play in,” said Gainesville-based Republican pollster and strategist Alex Patton, who is not aligned with any GOP candidate.
That prolonged battle could end up harming the eventual Republican nominee, Patton said.
“Because of the difficulty in getting the nomination, and because these guys are out there savaging each other, their negatives” — meaning negative ratings in polls — “are going up, even among Republicans,” he said.
“If the Democrats had a primary, it would be playing out the same way. Right now, they can sit back and laugh and enjoy it.”
